Hybrid Lecture: Music of the Civil War

During the American Civil War, music was a huge part of how soldiers and civilians alike passed the time, entertained themselves, and memorialized the war. This program features original arrangements of selections from both the Union and Confederate sides, including many songs most Americans know today.

Marc Ferris is the author of Star-Spangled Banner: The Unlikely Story of America’s National Anthem (Johns Hopkins Univ. Press). He earned an M.A. in history from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and his work has appeared in the New York Times, Newsday, Time Out New York, Spin, Vibe, and elsewhere.
